New Beginings

I think that's the 37th time I've used that title !!! Woke up feeling million % better this morning, still got DOMS on abs and hips but last night I couldn't even sit up so progress !! Basic starting stats to benchmark - RHR - 43 bpm Weight - 11 st 0.7 lbs Threshold pace - 6.12/mm Interesting stats to kick off.  Weight has balooned as I've sacked off running and started eating garbage again.  that's all change today so should drop off comfortably. Threshold pace was on my 10k yesterday, 3k - I'll use that as an index.   301w @ 3:53/km @ 159 bpm Today the plan is - Recover - need to heal still, no core Strength - leg weights, specifically calf Rehab - pilates on the glutes Slow build but the plan was always to start intervals tomorrow! The strenth work (weighted calf raises, weighted lunges and glute activation) really noticing the difference.  Feel stronger.  My hip is aching but I am hoping in a good way, in as much as I am breaking it down and rebuilding it!

Core

2 days of core workouts and strength work and no running. Feel battered, the body took a hammering with that. Clearly I am not used to this so great news that it's breaking down a weakness.  Fingers crossed this is the missing link that is going to make the difference. Very tired today's session but aiming to prioritise these for the next couple of weeks.  I'll try running tomorrow, mainly just want to see if I feel better (proper hangover today) in myself and if the hips feel less hammered. The whole hip / glute chain is the reason behind this.  I did feel less sore around them and also the calf area so maybe, just maybe I've solved something! Looking at track workouts for speed.  I think it's important not to go silly to start with so the first week I'll 100% be staying in flats and keeping a lid on things.  I'm not really eyeing up track season but I am certainly going to go for indoors all things being well. In the v45 age group the big targets next year

The oh f*@k moment

It always happens eventually. It's clear everything isn't 100%.  Running feeling awful - generally just carp - but also feeling my body slowly break down towards the inevitable hip injury. Running is tough, probably one of the toughest things on your body as you evolve into an old fart!  You need to be on top physically and mentally to get through it.   The last few days I've had a chance to think about things. As I have said over and again, I get into decent shape and then slowly deteriorate to injury and then recover and start again.  It's not ideal!  My blogs are prettty interesting (ven if I do say myself) when I am on form.  Once I'm loosing it they become absolute drivel. First up, the physical.  I am taking a couple of weeks to rebuild my body.  My core has always been neglected.  A couple of weeks focus on addressing this and we'll see if that helps running.  I reckon that my weak core is possibly the root of my hip/glute issues that I have been plagued

Updates

It's been a while! The body I have to admit has been a bit broken since the session last week.  It's been around 3 weeks now since I ran consistently and well. The main issue is the calf / achillies which is likely a minor tear.  On top of that my left hip has started to ache (as it was just before I had the bigger injuries).  My lower back aches and generally I've felt a bit achey. Motivation has been low.  Running on niggles can do that to a boy ! Yesterday, for one thing and another I sacked off running completely.  Not ideal in a build phase. Today, determined to get to the root I did some digging. Everything seems to be coming from my hips / lower back. I have perpetually been injured from what seems more mechanical than overuse injuries since 2010. So I have revisited the leg discrepancy - bike fit in 2018 showed left leg significantly shorter than right.  It seems my body overcompensates and generally I get away with it.  My theory is that fatigued it starts to break

The long way around

Since the 5k TT I've aggrivated my calf / achillies beyond belief.  It's comical that the 2 x 5k TT's have specifically caused the biggest issues since the comeback (comeback #247) Tuesday I managed (after basically run-hobbling the previous week) to knock out some intervals around Howells Mere. 4 x lap on / off between tempo (5:25/mm) and steady (6:15/mm).  Felt amazing and leg was perfect. Wednesday things weren't so great and the calf was in bits. Thursday and an easy 6 @ 7:10/mm feeling relaxed.  Calf not quite right but not that wrong. Rested up today just to sure things up and I'll put in a decent weekend.  That'll round off 3 disrupted weeks and then I'll start with another block. The plan for now is to go back to fundamentals.  Build slowly and build a strong base. I'l lay off the intervals and hard sessions and just build miles in.  The plan is to aim high.  It may need doubles so the pace (or power) will need to be reduced.  I need to build a s
