Marathon Training Day 2

Yesterday I read the session slightly wrong, think I was supposed to do 9 miles LT with 4 @ tempo whereas it turned out to be 9 miles 'general' and 4 miles LT. Nonetheless was a good run at a decent clip and didn't kill me.

Todays run was always going to be harder, even though these 'general aerobic' run are at a very comfortable pace, I have not done big miles for months now. Pace wise, bopping along at 7/mm is easy enough but 12 miles I would still consider a long 'un - although from now long is 16+.

So, 12 miles general endurance (138 - 155 bpm). Started off easy enough, first mile up in 7.14 followed by a decent 6.46 with wind behind and well under 150 bpm. 3rd mile took a different route for a change and last bit was into bang wind. Garmin beeped for low battery - shite !! Thought it was good. So, knowing Garmin wouldn't last, ran back the way I came.

Would have to do 2 loops whatever happened so decided to do 3 mile out and back twice (yawn!) At 4 miles stopped and turned GPS & backlight off on Garmin, knew where mile markers were so wasn't a problem just wouldn't be aware of pace till the mile was up.

Kept the pace to just sub 7's back home and then started lap 2 much the same. HR was rising a bit into the wind upto 155/6 bpm and back down to 146/7 bpm with wind behind. Brutal wind on the 9th mile, really took it out of me, turned straight back for 10th mile and was getting blown along, couldn't see the lap as I hit it until I got home and was shocked to see a 6:20.

Last 2 miles were into the wind and found them hard. 7.11 & 6:57 I think with HR rising to about 158 bpm at times.

Good effort tonight, 12 miles @ 150 bpm for 6:54/mm and it was blowing out there. Definately well up there in terms of HR / pace and better shape than I have ever started a marathon campaign.

Recovery day tomorrow and these days I will take as serious recovery. Nice and easy to refresh the legs. Back was tight tonight and made hammys tight.

Had an X-Ray and MRI today. Took no time and actually drifted off in the MRI machine. Hopefully consultant will nail the hip issue now and see whats needed to get rid of it going forward. Still think it is a tendon issue rather than bone. No aches today, just still back / sciatic issue so happy to keep running.

Onwards and upwards !
