Old Man Aches

Last couple of weeks have been interesting. Last Sunday ran 15 miles @ 6.20/mm feeling great. Hips ached afterwards so X-Trained a couple of days then ran 8 @ 7.10 pace feeling so-so. Thursday did 6 x mile in 5.18, 5.21, 5.22, 5.22, 5.25 & 5.36 (uphill). Absolutely cracking session. Friday hip went fubar on an easy 7.5 and had to walk home. X Train Sat & Sun then rest Monday and physio (weak hip flexors, tight glute).

So that's the round up. I prey that my running is one long boring progress from a 31 min Frostbite to a sub 2.30 marathon but alas it seems the rollercoaster that is my return to athletics will continue!!

The physio - Eric @ Bodybalance at the HIPAC in Hatfield is an amazing guy. Not only does he have some great stories of people, places & events he's worked on but he nails what's wrong with you.

He quickly identified my Hip adductors problem was my flexors in fact and the tightness from the glutes that was a hangover from St Neots was the route of it all. He is slightly (5%) worried that it may be a stressy and a bit worried it may be a hip issue rather than tendons.

He worked top and bottom flexors (strangest feeling ever) and the movement range in my hip was obvious. I am booked in to see a hip specialist in Cambridge on Friday and that should get to the route of the problem once and for all.

His recommendation was to reduce volume until I get a final diagnosis on Friday and maybe Bedford half will be unwise.

So, braved a run today. Hip actually ached beforehand but throughout the run it was fine and just my glute that was tender. Right leg was actually quite tight on the run but not unusual after a few days off.

Started gingerly (rough splits) in 8.05, then 7.33, 7.05 HR around 153 bpm and picked up last 5 miles to 158-163bpm LT range 6.36, 6.46, 6.56, 6.38, 6.26

Pleased with that, worked out 7/mm off a slow start and felt better as the run progressed. HR says thats where it needs to be and tonight just hoping nothing falls off my old body!!

Tomorrow will probably do 12 in my 'Endurance Zone' - 141-151bpm to ease the legs off.

Sunday have Bedford Half and Frostbite to choose from. Not confident at the minute so will see how this week goes. Maybe just a few nice steady runs in the 150 & 160 bpm ranges and work on a bit of strength might be safest bet. Don't want to make anything worse and todays run was happy enough.

Gutted to miss road reps tonight, my best session by far and nice to feel good at 5.2x pace !
